What’s fair trade coffee all about?

Fair trade is the term given to coffee produced in such a way that growers get a fair price and workers get a fair wage and safe working conditions. This has come about because for a long time those big, flashy coffee brands we all know have been draining every last cent out of the coffee supply chain in a ruthless fashion, using their might to pressure land owners who in turn pressure workers to work for very little in dangerous circumstances (exposure to pesticides, inability to grow alternative crops, etc).

This eq.tv short documentary from the US nutshells the concept quite nicely. Enjoy.

While that US-made documentary is a good overview of fair trade, you can read up on the Australian approach at www.fairtrade.com.au.

Why is Baristador Coffee offering a Fairtrade espresso blend?

Steve Davis amid Fairtrade coffee beans

Baristador Coffee is now offering a Fairtrade blend because while experimenting with new coffee beans, I stumbled upon a blend combination that blew me away. It was awesome; full bodied, well rounded, nutty, with a hint of caramel. Then I was doubly awestruck when I discovered the beans were certified Fairtrade beans. This surprised me because despite the well meaning efforts of many coffee companies dealing with fair trade products, I had never found a coffee I liked. So I had moved away from Fair Trade because no matter how enthused you are about ethics, there is a limit to how long you can drink ethically sound coffee you don’t like!

But now times have changed. Fair Trade coffee farmers are getting better and better at what they do, benefiting from the confidence and breathing space that the prospect of receiving a fair price must surely bring, and now Baristador Coffee can bring a Fairtrade Espresso Blend to market that matches my palate and, hopefully, yours too!

My hope is that this first Baristador Coffee Fairtrade Espresso Blend will be the luscious, darkly roasted, rich coffee blend that will stop any cravings you might have for cheaper blends or “exploited land and labour” blends, and lead you into a new state of being where you can confidently decide to drink coffee with a clear conscience and a satisfied palate!

This is the Plunger Grind, just perfect for plungers but TOO COARSE for espresso machines.

FT1 Fairtrade Blend – Whole Beans
Price Units
$14.50 (AUD)

These are Whole Beans ready for you to grind to your preferred finish. Please note: If you plan to leave them sit in your Espresso Machine, I recommend you tip in a day’s worth every morning. Unfortunately, most domestic and office espresso machines have the bean hopper sitting way to close to the heating elements, forcing beans to sweat and become sticky.
